What guidelines should I follow when submitting my photos to create a photo book?

Updated over a month ago

For optimal results, we recommend following the guidelines below and reviewing troubleshooting steps if quality issues arise.

  • Avoid using photos obtained from messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, Instagram, and Facebook, as the quality may have been compressed. Our system only accepts JPEG and PNG formats.

  • Whenever possible, use the original photos. If you receive an image from a friend or family member, kindly ask them to send you the file via email, Google Photos, or Dropbox, as these platforms do not compress files.

  • Provide the original photo taken with your digital camera, preferably in the highest resolution available (measured in pixels/DPI). A minimum resolution of 300 DPI is required to ensure sharp printing quality.

  • For photo collages, it's advisable to utilize smaller-sized photos because they undergo compression to fit the frame. Uploading photos with excessively high resolutions may result in pixelation.

  • Test Image Clarity by Zooming: Open the image in a photo viewer and zoom in 2–3 times. If the image pixelates or appears blurry, the resolution may be too low for printing. Only submit images that remain sharp after zooming.

  • Replace Low-Quality Photos: Swap out blurry images with higher-quality, original ones. Ask the original photographer to resend the file using a quality-preserving method such as email.

Company Solutions for Image Quality Issues

  • Reorder with Credits: If your order is affected by image quality issues, some companies may offer free reorders or credits. Optimalprint, for example, provides credit for reordering, allowing customers to replace blurry images with sharper ones. Credits are added automatically and can be viewed in the checkout basket.

  • Support System Notifications: Be aware that printing systems may flag low-resolution images during the upload process. However, in some cases, the system might not detect every low-quality image. If an undetected issue arises, contact support for resolution options.
